| Step Profile
There are four basic shapes that fit the nose profile of the step. These are as follows:
Square
Bull-nosed
Raked Back
Chevron
The square stair nosing is fitted to steps that are at a 90º angle to the tread. The raked back stair nosing is fitted to steps that are at an 83º angle to the tread. (Rake back staircases are usually found in new build projects). The bull-nosed stair nosing is fitted to steps that have a round edge, a wide majority of which are found when installing stair nosing to a wooden staircase. The chevron stair nosing is often used to accommodate all step profiles. The above four sections are the standard four shapes that a stair nosing will follow. These four profiles are available in different sizes e.g. the size of the tread and riser will vary depending upon the installation requirements.

Treads / Risers
The tread is the part of the step / stair nosing that traffic will travel over
The riser is the section of the staircase that is vertical to the tread

Gauge The gauge is the thickness of the stair nosing. See below where you would measure the gauge:
The floor covering thickness will determine the gauge of the stair nosing. When fitting thinner floor coverings such as vinyl, lino or lightweight carpets,we would recommend
a standard stair nosing with a gauge of 3.5mm. When fitting thicker floor covering such as medium weight carpets and heavy duty smooth flooring we would recommend a heavyweight stair nosing with a gauge of 5mm. Heavyweight stair nosings can be viewed in the heavy duty nosing section of Products. Sometimes the floor covering is too thick for the stair nosing – In these instances the underside of
the stair nosing must be packed – Please Contact Us for advice. Some installations require the stair nosing to be fitted straight onto concrete; in these instances
we would recommend our Ramp Edge Profiles. These profiles can also be laid on top of fitted smooth
floor coverings.
